ELAPHITI: CAR-FREE ZONE

The islands of Koločep and Lopud are completely car-free!

Elaphites [Elafiti] – the islands of rich nature, sandy beaches, interesting history, and special vibes. Of a total of thirteen islands, only three are inhabited; Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan.

As one of the most attractive destinations in the region, the archipelago has preserved well a bond between man and nature. The islands are covered by lush Mediterranean vegetation, excellent beaches, numerous cultural and historical sights, so it is not surprising that the economy of the islands has largely turned into a tourism branch.

One of the interesting things about the islands is the fact that, despite the tourism development, the islands of Koločep and Lopud remained completely car-free zone. The lack of road traffic actually adds to the real island experience. Instead of noise, and traffic jams, you can hear crickets and the magnificent sound of the sea. Only in “emergencies”, if a large load arrives by boat, a few tractors arrive to help, but otherwise, everything else is carried or pulled. On Lopud, it is also possible to find a few electric golf cars as a substitute for a taxi, which drives only to Šunj beach, and every other corner of the island is reachable only by walk or boat. The absence of cars has preserved nature, wildlife, and peculiar peace. Islands with diverse landscapes and terrains, thus are excellent locations for walking, exploring, and relaxing. The waterfront with most of the houses, shops, restaurant terraces, and cafes stretches through populated settlements on both islands. Side streets usually continue on promenades or forest tracks that lead to beaches and spectacular panoramic spots. Both islands can boost themselves with sandy beaches around their shore, while Koločep island also hides fascinating caves reachable only by boat.
